22nd February, Tuesday: ITC Evening Class

Welcome to computer lab class!

I look forward to getting to know you all over the next two weeks. Please read through this post carefully as it covers everything you need to know to be successful in this course.

From 5 until 5.30 is our grace period - read through the post, watch videos, etc until our 5.30 attendance. Make sure to join the meeting by 5.30. NB My usual class runs 8 until noon, so resources will likely reflect these times. Please adapt accordingly and reach out if you have questions.

First day activities:

  • watch the Welcome video above; there are other welcome/tour videos on the Lectures tab which guide you around the site and Teams

  • watch the Welcome to ITC video below

  • read through the welcome documents on the tab "The Lab" including Lab Policies - these are discussed in the Welcome video

  • click "Courses" at the top of this page and select Introduction to Computers from the menu to locate your course outline, schedule, handouts, videos, etc etc

  • sign in on ECampus for back-up attendance tracking (primary tracking is done through Teams)

  • make note of all scheduled meetings for your course as per the week's schedule to ensure you're present for reviews, demos, exams, etc

  • join my Teams classroom by clicking here. I have added all of you using your school credentials (5042******@vacc.college). Let me know immediately if you cannot access Teams or your student account. If you are asked for a code, use uz8or6x. Note you need to use your college email account to access full functionality. Once you are a member of the Team, the meetings scheduled for the week will show on your Calendar. Click here for Teams resources.

Welcome to Intro to Computers!

Percentage grade, two weeks. Please access the "Suggested Daily Schedule" - this lists which resources to access each day of the course. Start with the Welcome to ITC video.

Course Overview

Purpose

To learn the basics of the Microsoft Office suite of programs, including Excel, Word, and Powerpoint

To learn the basic history of the internet, email browsers, etc.

To apply your knowledge by creating a Word document, an Excel workbook, and a PowerPoint presentation

Assignments

You have three assignments, one in each of the Office programs. Although three case studies are provided for each, I suggest you complete the following for the best hands-on experience:

  • Assignment 1 (Word); choose one from (1) Newsletter, or (2) Flyer; worth 10% of final grade

  • Assignment 2 (Excel); choose one from (2) Recreate a Worksheet if you're unfamiliar with Excel; (1) Inventory if you want to be creative; worth 10% of final grade

  • Assignment 3 (PowerPoint); choose one from (1) School Orientation, (2) Fundraiser, or (3) Club Meeting; worth 10% of final grade

You can find the written guidelines on ECampus under "Assignments." You have the freedom to complete your three assignments in any order (all are due the final day of your course at midnight), so I suggest starting with the program(s) with which you are most familiar (usually Word). On your Courses page, you will find example assignments and demo videos.
