Queen’s Mourning – Monday, September 19, 2022
We wish to formally convey our sincere condolences on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. As we reflect on the incredible life of Canada's Queen and the longest-serving Monarch in British history, we are humbled by her life of devoted service.
Yesterday, the Federal Government announced a holiday on Monday, September 19th for federal workers to commemorate the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The announced holiday applies only to employees in industries regulated by the Federal Government, such as banks, post offices and the federal public service. Most of Canada's provinces have not declared Monday to be a statutory holiday, although some have designated that employees working for the provincial government may take the day off. Our business falls into the category of private sector industries. While we encourage everyone who wishes to do so to reflect upon the passing of our Head of State, it will be business as usual for all businesses operating under CDI (College Division), VACC, VCAD, Reeves, SCHEJ, New Quest Operations and Amenida.
What is a federal holiday and does it apply to me?
There are two types of holidays in Canada, which sometimes coincide: provincial and federal holidays. A federal holiday applies to federally regulated businesses.
On provincial holidays, private businesses need to close and give their employees a day off or provide additional compensation if they stay open.
How does declaring Monday a holiday affect Canadian business?
The Canadian Federation of Independent Business released a statement Tuesday urging provincial governments not to declare Monday a statutory paid holiday after the federal government’s announcement. “With a six-day notice, it would be deeply unfair for small businesses and cost the economy billions.” We appreciate that public schools may be closed due to the Federal Government announcement and announcements by some provinces.
