CES

1. MONDAY

Search for job ads you would be interested in applying to after graduating/for practicum. You can find these online, in newspapers, etc. Pick ones with description of the position's responsibilities and required qualifications. The more information the better.

2. Go through the ad and highlight key language that you might want to mirror in you application materials: MASTER AD exercise. Instructions in DropBox. Submit via email.

3. TUESDAY

Update your resume, or create a new one, as if you were responding to the master ad you created.

I am looking for:

            -consistent formatting

            -legibility, clarity, and visual appeal

-one page (references, certificates, etc, can go on their own page)

-include experience, education, and relevant skills (ex: languages spoken)

4. Write a cover letter to supplement and expand upon your resume. Use the video and document "Cover letter example and guide."

I am looking for:

            -consistent formatting

            -one page

            -specificity, examples

-expands on resume - does not repeat

            -correct (and stylish!) written English

Again, use the "cover letter example and guide" document for a more thorough walkthrough. Some questions a good cover letter answers include:

What job are you applying for?

How did you hear about the job?

Why do you want to work in this field?

Why do you want to work for this company?

What sort of experience and education do you have?

What skills and qualities do you possess which make you a good candidate?

Why are you right for this position?

5. WEDNESDAY

Have drafts ready for a peer workshop; you will give and receive feedback from your classmates. You will also receive written feedback from me Thursday.

6. THURSDAY

Make changes to your resume and cover letter based on feedback received.

7. FRIDAY

Interview exercise - instructions in DropBox. Final drafts due by 4pm.
